Valia Shoja, MA

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Virginia, providing counseling to individual adults, couples, and families. I specialize in working with adults navigating mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma and abuse. I have worked with couples and families experiencing domestic conflicts, cross-cultural and inter-faith marriages, among other issues. I have experience working with adults through identity exploration, cultural adjustment, and life transitions.

I am an Iranian-American immigrant and my lived experiences have given me unique insight into the challenges faced by underprivileged communities and vulnerable populations. Rooted in my spiritual and cultural background, I am deeply committed to making mental health services more accessible. I believe in the healing power of storytelling as a pathway to resilience and collective recovery. I also hold the conviction that every individual possesses an authentic inner compass that can guide them toward meaning and purpose in life. My mission is to support clients in exploring their values and aspirations while fostering a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship. Together, we will work collaboratively in a safe and supportive space to pursue long-term goals and lasting growth.

I earned my Master’s in Counseling from George Washington University. I am Level 1 trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS) through the IFS Institute, with specialized training in applying IFS when working with Muslims.

My therapeutic approach is person-centered integrative, drawing from Internal Family System (IFS), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I use techniques from the Gottman Method and Relational Life Therapy (RLT) for couples.

I provide therapy in both English and Persian(Dari).
